Keeping the anti-Chinese riots of Indonesia in 1998 in mind

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rtNeeUDlxcM

As a Chinese in Mainland China, I felt very shocked at the news of anti-Chinese riots of Indonesia in 1998, not only for the serious damage to ethnic Chinese, but also for the inaction of Chinese government.

In the May of 1998, I was studying in senior high school. As politics lesson was required in the university admission exam, news program broadcast in CCTV-1 at 7:00 P.M. was part of our study as well as reading the paper concerning the big events in the world. Unfortunately, Chinese government forbade the coverage of this serious event. Government was afraid that general public in Mainland China would oppose to the government and required to help the overseas Chinese in Indonesia. Demonstration organized by the students of Beijing University in front of Indonesia Embassy was also forbidden by the Police Department. As of today, many people in Mainland China was still unaware of  this event. Information of the anti-Chinese Riots in Indonesia is only available in internet. As for the people who never log on internet, they will never know this serious event.

Until now, I am still very angry at the inaction of Chinese government as ethnic Chinese in Indonesia were in so dangerous situation, they were helpless at that moment. China is their ancestry country, for the people who still bear Chinese citizenship, China is their motherland. The government is obligated to help them out from Indonesia.

When Jiang Zemin, the Ex-President of China, met with Suharto, the Ex-President of Indonesia, in May of 1998, he said that since many Chinese lived in Indonesia, they had become one part of Indonesia, they would make efforts together with native Indonesia to create prosperity. How could the Jiang Ze Min be so cold hearted? Obviously implying that the ethnic Chinese living in Indonesia had nothing to do with China. Oh shed! During the flood in 1998, would he feel guilty when accepting the donation from Overseas Chinese?

Previously, I didn’t know much about the hardship of overseas Chinese, especially that of Indonesia. Having searched information on internet, I realized that ethnic Chinese in Indonesia make livelihood very hard. Government of Indonesia tried their best to remove the spread of Chinese culture, no Chinese school, paper and logo. People could not use Chinese character in Indonesia except Japanese guys. Besides, the Indonesian government forced ethnic Chinese  to join into Indonesian nationality and name themselves by Indonesian language. Even though the Indonesian governments have been conducting severe restrictions on Chinese there, Letter of Chinese pronunciation was still placed as the first letter of their name. We could understand that how reluctant when they changed their name. Moreover, ethnic Chinese have been subjecting to frequent attack from indigenous Indonesian without any protection from police. The anti-Chinese riots in 1998 and 1965 in Indonesia are just typical large scale ones, this kind of attack never stopped.

Regarding the citizenship, there is something to do with Chinese government. When People’s Republic of China was newly founded in 1949, many countries in Southeast Asia didn’t trust on China, they were concerned about large numbers of Chinese people living in their countries.

In order to obtain the support from Indonesia, Chinese government decided to adopt single citizenship policy. The people who joined in another citizenship, their Chinese citizenship will be automatically ineffective. At that moment, Chinese government encouraged them to join in citizenship of Indonesia for the sake of diplomacy.

Whenever there was attack towards ethnic Chinese, the Indonesia media would quote for the excuse of filthy rich of Chinese people, never blamed the criminal. Is it true that ethnic Chinese  spend very rich life there? Absolutely not. Since the Indonesian government restrict the fields where Chinese people could enter , ethnic Chinese could only make livelihood by commerce and industry. As for the fields closely related to resources, they were dominated by powerful families of indigenous Indonesian. Rich ethnic Chinese  just accounts for 5% of total ethnic Chinese there, most of them were very poor. They still lived in wood house, as they could not afford brick house.

Rich ethnic Chinese has almost escaped to other countries. While a large part of Chinese there could not leave Indonesia as they could not afford visa. Many ethnic Chinese girls there would rather try  to become mail-order bride than staying in Indonesia to suffer from further sexual abuse. Previously this just suits for the poor girls who want to go to foreign countries. While now many ethnic Chinese girls who have received high education also join in this field. Because they have no choice but to make every effort to leave Indonesia.

How I wish that Chinese government could pick up them back to China, at least they could spend safe life. Economic status in China has been remarkably improved. In 1960s, Premier Zhou Enlai has sent ship to pick up the overseas Chinese in Southeast Asia to return to China. Now millions of ethnic Chinese in Indonesia could not live safely, their property was looted, their wife and daughter was gang raped, and some of them were even  tortured or burnt to death.

Another proposal I would like to put forward is to adopt the double citizenship policy, as most overseas Chinese bears deep feeling towards motherland, take pride in the Chinese culture. While they have to cope with their daily life and education of their children, join in the foreign citizenship is the requirement of basic livelihood.

In 2004, Indonesia Seaquake has dramatically damaged the life of  ethnic Chinese. Their life is much poorer now. We must help them to improve their life, otherwise we will feel more guilty. I will search for the website of Chinese organization in Indonesia for donation or any help I could provide.

Even though Chinese government and NGO organizations in China donated huge mount of money to the Indonesian government, I am concerned that those donation would not be allocated to ethnic Chinese there. Conversely this seems to encourage indigenous Indonesia to attack ethnic Chinese as Chinese government never take action to stop this kind of attacks while donate huge amount of money to Indonesia when it is in disaster. China is by no means rich, why donate so much to other countries to show power? not to mention donate to Indonesia which adopts severe restriction and discriminative legislation towards ethnic Chinese. If the donation totally goes to ethnic Chinese there, this would be OK while this is impossible.

If we really want to help them, perhaps donation to the Chinese organization in Indonesia will take more effect.

Below is an article I quoted from Internet, a letter from a Chinese Indonesian during the anti-Chinese riots in 1998, hope more people could pay attention to their hardship.
